Abstract

: Recent scientific articles (1-11), including one in this issue of the Annals (12), provide information relevant to the association of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome with the receipt of blood or blood products. The diverse topics covered in these articles show the number and complexity of the issues involved. The uncertainty about the cause and natural history of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome makes it difficult to place in proper perspective the risk of developing the syndrome from transfusions., Of the 3064 cases of patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome reported to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) by 22 December 1983,, (C) 1984 American College of Physicians
