This study shows a substantial increase in TACO occurrence with older age and greater number for units transfused and it suggests a significant increase in the odds of TACO among the elderly of about 3% per year of age increase. Furthermore, the study suggests a significantly increased TACO risk for persons with specific health conditions such as congestive heart failure (CHF), chronic pulmonary disease, and different types of anaemia. An increased TACO risk for women vs. men and White people vs. non-White people is suggested. The study reports that TACO occurrence may be related to the type of components transfused, with lower TACO diagnosis code rates for stays with single components transfused (e.g. platelets only group) and higher TACO rates for stays with RBCs transfused in combination with plasma or platelets. The Authors emphasize the importance and utility of large administrative databases as an additional epidemiological tool to assess occurrence and risk factors for TACO as well as provides clinicians with relevant information to better identify TACO at-risk persons and thus will serve public health to help prevent TACO occurrence .
