In one case herpes zoster, thrush, Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, and cytomegalovirus retinitis and cerebritis developed at 6 to 8 months after transplantation.
Demonstration of imputability or root cause: 
Two serum specimens collected eight months after transplantation were positive for HIV-1 antibody on enzyme immunoassay, but negative on Western blotting. The cerebritis progressed, and the patient died without a confirmed HIV diagnosis. The HIV-1 infection was confirmed subsequently by the detection of HIV-1 antibody and p24 antigen in stored serum as part of an investigation of all recipients from that donor following the detection of HIV transmisssion to a bone recipient.
