Adverse Occurrence type:
MPHO Type:
Alerting signals, symptoms, evidence of occurrence:
The microfilariae transmitted in this way should not lead
to filariasis due to the absence of vector stage; Only the microfilariae capable of microfilaremias,
which eventually die (but not the larvae capable of
developing into the adult form) are transmissible via this route. An inflammatory reaction to the degenerating parasites may but may theoretically lead
to a condition of post-transplant allergy but this has not been described.
.
Demonstration of imputability or root cause:
Possible but unproven. Living-donor renal transplant, where both donor and
recipient were from an endemic area. Recipient had filarial antibodies detected immediately after tranplant. Microfilariae and occasional eosinophils demonstrated in
the glomerular capillary loops and in the peritubular capillaries. Microfilariae were also demonstrated in the night blood smear of the donor subsequent to donation of kidney.
Imputability grade:
1 Possible
