Alerting signals, symptoms, evidence of occurrence: 
Two patients developed endophthalmitis within 24 hours of corneal transplantation. In one Gram-positive cocci were found in a corneal ulcer exudate and the donor corneal rim grew Streptococcus pneumoniae. In the other S. pneumoniae grew from vitreous fluid but no donor culture was obtained.
