Adverse Occurrence type:
Alerting signals, symptoms, evidence of occurrence:
Four of eight recipients of artificial insemination (AI) with cryopreserved semen from a symptomless carrier of human T-cell lymphotropic virus type III (HTLV-III) were found to have antibody to the virus. One had generalised, persistent lymphadenopathy while the other three remained symptom free 3 years after insemination. (Note: this was before washing of sperm prior to insemination had become routine).
Demonstration of imputability or root cause:
Antibody negative recipients seroconverted after artificial insemination from a single donor. Three children born were antibody negative 1 year after birth.
