Various initial symptoms in a number of cases including fever, leukopenia, mild thrombopenia, splenomegaly, dementia.
Demonstration of imputability or root cause: 
In two cases the confirmed infections were attributed incorrectly to blood transfusions. The HIV-1 infection was confirmed subsequently to have been transmitted by the organs during an investigation of all recipients from that donor following the detection of HIV transmisssion to a bone recipient with confirmation of window-period infection in the donor. Other cases also described.
