Adverse Occurrence type:
MPHO Type:
Estimated frequency:
Rare
Time to detection:
Severe anaphylactic reaction within several minutes after intrauterine insemination.
Alerting signals, symptoms, evidence of occurrence:
Generalized pruritus, abnominal pain, nausea and vomiting followed by bronchospasm and urticaria.
Demonstration of imputability or root cause:
Skin prick tests were performed for several allergens, resulting positive to bovine serum albumin (BSA). Moreover, high serum levels of IgE antibody against BSA have been found. These data showed that BSA, contained in sperm culture medium, was the factor which triggered the anaphylactic reaction.

Expert comments for publication:
Six cases of allergic reaction due to BSA after insemination have been described. Nowadays, the sperm culture medium with BSA is no longer used and human serum albumin (HSA) has replaced BSA.
