Acute transfusion reaction rate= 9.6% of 507 red cell or whole blood units transfused on adult or pediatric patients on medical, surgical, obstetrical, and gynecologic wards who were not bleeding. No patients receiving cancer chemotherapy or with cardiac illnesses were included. All blood was not leukocyte reduced. Study occurred in Uganda, a resource-limited country. Overall rates: FNHTR= 4.9 per 100 units; TACO=0.6 per 100 units; Acute transfusion reactions= 0.4 per 100 units; allergic reactions= 1.4 per 100 units.
