Microbial contamination risk autologous eye drops

Record number:
1126
Alerting signals, symptoms, evidence of occurrence:
Twenty one patients included. Seven bottles with autologous serum were prepared for each patient and two samples from each bottle were taken (before use and after 24 hours of use) and then cultured in standard media.
Demonstration of imputability or root cause:
No ocular surface infection was observed even though 6.1% of the cultures were positive. Since the autologous serum has no preservative agent, patients without any ocular barrier may be at risk for an infectious process and therefore should be closely monitored.
